Rocky Mountain High

No, not us! (And if we were, do you think I'd tell you?)

We are in Denver, and getting ready for another day of fun, adventure and strange and beautiful things to see and do.

WOW!  Just spotted snow all over the tops of the mountains!!!

Our first excursion of the day took us out to the Denver International Airport to see the beautiful terminal building and the amazing red-eyed blue horse that stands in the median on the way into the airport area.

Once we bid the horse and airport farewell, we ventured into Denver proper to locate the home of House for All Sinners and Saints, the ELCA congregation pastored by Nadia Bolz-Weber, author of Pastrix and Accidental Saints. The congregation shares space with St. Thomas Episcopal, which was just starting their service as we passed by.

Heading out of Denver toward Laramie WY. To the right of the highway are plains. To the left, the Rockies!

The Colorado welcome center offered beautiful views, bunnies, and another horse.

We entered Wyoming and stopped at the rest area that features the largest head of Lincoln in the world!

On to Laramie, WY where we visited the Wyoming Territorial Prison Museum which featured an excellent new exhibit all about Butch Cassidy.

And what museum would be complete without an authentic horse poop exhibit? I'm not kidding.

No, I did NOT attempt to guess the smell. Ewwww!

There are some serious winds in this part of the country with gusts up to 50+ mph.

When we traveled I-80 through Wyoming in 2006, there was a rest area that was home to hundreds of prairie dogs. Those cute, furry, tiny beasts converged on unsuspecting tourists like seagulls on a ferry boat, begging adorably for any food offered to them. We sought out that same rest area this time around, but unfortunately no prairie dogs were to be seen!  On the other hand, the toilet paper was secured by lovely red padlocks, so the stop wasn't a complete loss.

There's not much in the way of cities, towns or even quirky tourist attractions  traveling the southern border of Wyoming. There are, however, some amazing land formations and piles of rocks!

We managed to reach elevations of over 8000 ft. Along with the popping of our ears and increased breathiness, the outside temperature has dropped significantly. In the 90's this morning, we are now down to 66 degrees. And the sun hasn't gone down yet!

We wondered about the many fence-like structures we kept seeing along the highway. Snow fences!

We finally made it to our destination of Evanston, WY, where we visited a very attractive Walmart store (is "attractive Walmart" an oxymoron?)
