We slept in just a little bit before starting our journey back to NC. We have traveled just over 4000 miles so far since we left a little over a week ago.
We stopped at a rest stop in Washington. Lizzie and Serra Jo have succumbed to the lure of Pokemon Go. We now have an Evie traveling along with us.
Lizzie searches for an elusive Growlithe |
And within 10 minutes we went from huge mountains, covered with giant evergreens and snow on the top, to the barren, rocky land of wide open spaces, little vegetation, and windmills.
We took our first off the road stop at the Ginkgo Petrified Forest Interpretive Center which overlooks the incredibly beautiful Columbia River. Gorgeous views.
On the way back to the highway we HAD to stop at the Ginkgo Gem Shop. Kitschy dinosaurs, beautiful scenery, petrified wood, rocks and a gift shop. I think we've found heaven!
Our next stop was just across the river, the Wild Horse Monument. A series of metal sculptures adorn the ridge high above the river gorge below.
The remainder of the day was relatively uneventful. Just more beautiful scenery, winding mountain roads and wide open spaces!
